# Renting in El Campello: can a tenant change the lock?

You have just moved into a rented flat and have no idea how many keys are out there. Whether you may change the cylinder, what to tell the landlord, and what to do with the old one.

1 October 2026 · 5 min read

El Campello gained 819 residents in 2024, the equivalent of more than two new neighbours every day. Many newcomers rent, at least at first, and every rented front door has keys that have been through other hands: previous tenants, agents, cleaners, the owner’s family.

So the question comes up often: can a tenant simply change the lock?

## The short answer

In general, yes, **the cylinder** can be changed by a tenant for their own security, provided it is done sensibly:

- the door and the lock body are not damaged or altered;
- **the original cylinder is kept**, so it can go back in when you leave, or its keys handed back with the new ones;
- you **tell the landlord**, ideally in writing.

The rented home is your home while you live there, and a landlord cannot come in without your permission. That said, contracts vary, and some include a clause about locks. **Read yours first**, and if in doubt, ask the landlord or the agency before the work is done. This is general information, not legal advice.

## Why the cylinder, not the lock

On most front doors the keys belong to a **euro cylinder**, the part you see from outside with the keyhole in it. Changing it changes the keys. The lock case inside the door, and on armoured doors the bolts and gearbox, stay exactly as they are.

That is why it is quick, why it does not damage the door, and why putting the original cylinder back at the end of the tenancy takes a few minutes.

## Doing it the tidy way

1. **Tell the landlord** in a short message: that you are changing the cylinder for security, that the original is being kept, and that the door is not being altered.
2. **Keep the old cylinder and its keys together**, labelled, in a safe place in the flat.
3. **Decide about a key for the landlord.** Some tenants leave one in a sealed envelope for emergencies such as a leak while they are away; others prefer not to. Either is reasonable, if agreed.
4. **At the end**, either refit the original cylinder or leave the new one and hand over all its keys, whichever the landlord prefers.

## What the tenant cannot change

- **Communal doors**: the portal, the pool gate and the garage door belong to the community. See [the residencial gate lock: owner, president or administrador?](https://locksmithelcampello.es/blog/who-decides-on-the-residencial-gate-lock/)
- **The door itself**, its frame or anything that changes how it looks from the landing, without the landlord’s agreement.

## If the reason is a break-in

If you want the lock changed because someone has already tried the door, the order of things is different: evidence first, then the police report, then the repair. That is set out in [photograph the forced door before anyone repairs it](https://locksmithelcampello.es/blog/photograph-the-forced-door-before-anyone-repairs-it/).

A new euro cylinder fitted on a day that suits you, with every key handed to you and the old cylinder kept for the end of the tenancy.
